Horror lyrics

Here are the lyrics for the new Mekons album HORROR:

01.The Western Design
In 1654 on Christmas day the fleet left
Portsmouth The British empire, taking off
Before the Western design
Private citizens, individuals or companies
Managed the work of expansion

Jon Dee, with his scrying mirror
Necromanced the British empire,
Oliver Cromwell kicked it off

Brutal men, sick and untrained
The worke we may doe in the the world
The worke we may doe in the world

They couldn’t capture
Hispaniola So they went and
found a harbour
The red dawn of England’s empire (400 years)
Land of wood and water (XAYMACA)
The Arawaks was there first

A slave operated imperial profit generator
The Western design, a giant Frankenstein
400 years of stealing and killing,
a giant Frankenstein
Ghostlining the Western design

02.Sad and Sad and Sad

Oh, I am so sad and sad and sad
And all the bad things I’ve ever done
Fix me with an evil eye

And the sizzling coals I walk upon
Have much bigger feet to fry
I measure my age by everything that I’ve forgotten
An old steam kettle with a rusty bottom

A whisper comes from the living world
Not much, but it will do
Faint as a heartbeat, its message is curdled
There will be no knock or ring for you

And in the night there are sights to be seen
From out of the wall my sorrows creep
You can’t keep the shadows from giving up their dreams
And there is a lack of tomorrows

Had made that sin appear a virtue
Had it made it appear no sin; had made it appear
Absolved by time and circumstances
As by some magical wishing; and yet it remains to fester uncured
Almost as if those sinned against still felt themselves to have some unaddressed complaint

03.Glasgow

I lived 10 years in Glasgow
But it sometimes felt like home
All the time in the past we don’t get back

For duty and for family
I slipped out the close
Broken glass and arrows pointing south

On the M6 at Carlisle
I was sick and tired of everything
Mother India calling you last night
Chill me and thrill me
From Govan up to Gallowgate
Whatever may betide

04.Fallen Leaves

Cold sweats through late summer, blood traces on the ground
The dry earth cracks and shadows grow, a dying sun sinks down
Horrors and cold slaughter, silent mystery
Staring down the winding sheets, draped across the trees.
And back up in the city I watched the falling leaves
Blown wild across the courtyard and gathered at your feet
Fallen leaves

Words cut from a puzzle filled with kryptonite
Moved around and rearranged, dark in your heart at night

05.War Economy

On behalf of the future, I ask you leave the past alone
You are not welcome, we have no government
We did not invite you, you do not know us
Nor do you know our world, you have no right to rule us

Our identities have no bodies
Physical coercion will not achieve dominance

East of Eden only violence and greed
Supernatural financialisation

Some are 12 up, on the low 40
Between markets of fear
22 was hit off CFGI

It’s a war economy.••

06.Mudcrawlers

An old grey river winds through heavy miles of night
A sleeping town, ballast in the hold
Fleek the famine in coal and potato bins
Blood money, three pounds a head

We came across as cargo, Mudcrawlers contraband
Over the side into the sucking tide
Just our own hands to guide us home
A gibbet against the sky, a blinking moon that flies
Up the muddy banks crawl contraband

In the foundations of new buildings, the bones of Irish families still lie
Cork for America, ended up right here
Mud and shit dried in our clothes and hair
Blind in the morning sun, we walk and then we run
Ballast cargo contraband

07.A Horse Has Escaped

Were we ever happy or were we never happy?
What lengths would you go to to prove the omission to me?
What form will it take? What size and what shape?
Now the barn is on fire and a horse has escaped

What business requires my immediate attention?
What steps should I take to obscure my mistake?
The ship is sinking, and a horse has escaped
Meanwhile, the horse has escaped

We don’t know where he’s going, but he knows how to run
We left the gate wide-open now it’s over before it’s begun
There’s nothing to do, it’s already too late
It’s too late, a horse has escaped

08.Private Defense Contractor

So, The bud disappears when the blossom breaks through
And all that you knew takes the pain that you knew
Private defence contractor sitting in the sun
Doesn‘t care, doesn’t need to run

So, He wears a golden helmet in the market of Um
That’s what we do carrying a gun
Our enemies are here and over there
Underground in the sea floating in the air
So, Decline purchase Transformation Stage Senile up our holy Unit human cage Politics of death, bottom of between Rustic Vampire going for the grain

So, In my fantasy world, the owl has flown
Cryptic signs say crawl under the throne
May the happy church hold you
Police priest your body for evermore

09.Sanctuary

Lightly Pfund the tin plate hearts, shining with regret
Miles and climates we passed through, like friends we never met
I am taking you home, now I am leading you on
Looking down from the hills on somewhere that we might belong

Jesus on a chain-link fence hanging in the sun
Rusty iron with cactus blooms in the wilderness
In the blood of Christ Mountains, shoes for tiny feet
At the end of the road we stumble on sanctuary

This dead land is our monument rising up and round.
Dusty dry to brush the sky and shade the sacred ground
And our eyes and feet follow one tiny shining hand
Through a crack in the earth, down to the Rio Grande

10.Surrender

When you love me, if you love me
When you love me, it will shine
We turn and spin, twisting desire
A bonfire flames in twilight’s tower

Some mortal wound, some injury
We barter now the days and hours
Drive the nail, fix the lock
Stalk and spy, and watch the clock

As it withers, soul distressed
We damage all that we caressed
In the future, we’ll find ecstasy
In the future we surrender

11.You’re Not Singing Any More

Despite the passage of time and an agreement to forget
Still sitting on secrets and opening graves
Despite the passage of time

Plucked from the air, it’s hard when you fall
Songs of the past, you’re not singing anymore
You said it was easy, no questions at all
Songs of the past, you’re not singing anymore

Streets I walked down, bars, and hotels
The day may never come, you can’t please everyone
The streets I walked down

Can you tell us about what happened here?
Tell us how you slayed the beast
The wind blows in from off the sea as we prepare the feast

She wears black clothes and holds a carnation
For 82 years she has been waiting, she wears black clothes

12.Before the Ice Age

It‘s like something walking around
When I know I’m all alone
All the lies I’ve told coming back to taunt
Shapeless ghosts coil writhe and creep
Frozen with a fear that will never learn to speak
Sweat turns to ice on my face
I age a thousand years

I’m falling through the cracks in the floor
Is it slime or blood that oozes from my skin
Trapped and suffocated by my sins and infections
Slow motion catastrophe melting worms crawl out my eyes

My surplus value stolen by a Victorian vampire sucking out my cold cold heart
The walls of my self are crashing quietly in the transistor dark
Slimy fingers on the glass touch scream

My data stripped and whipped and sold in chains by officious machines
All the harvested organs grow legs and run like rats in a swarm
In a cold cellar with peeling walls the light bulb swings
As the torturer begins to sing and chant
Asteroids are falling in the empty acid dark

Vomiting up frozen bile, the tide of fear draws back long enough to see the beach
In between the blows of the policeman’s truncheon cold blue and long
I go back to sleep, I go back to sleep
