Looking back again: In 1970 I attended several festivals. I tried to collect some information and all in all I succeeded. There may be mistakes ( I still can’t  locate Edgar Winter - with or without Johnny).

Anyway: Those were the days:

1) PROGRESSIVE POP FESTIVAL -Sporthalle Cologne, April 3 and 4, 1970

I fell asleep during Deep Purple and awoke while Chicken Shack were playing. Tyrannosaurus Rex had been one of my fav bands so far but they were extremely boring. The Nice were announced but didn’t play. Spencer Davis is not mentioned any where but he was there.

Some information about the Deep Purple show:

Deep Purple Sporthalle, Köln, Germany April 4th, 1970 “Progressive Pop Festival” (audience) This is directly taken from a silver CD called “Progressive Pop Festival”. It’s one of the oldest Deep Purple audience recordings known to exist. There are just three older ones: Inglewood 1968 (with the “Mark I” line up, released officially on Sonic Zoom), Zürich March 4th or 5th, 1970 and Berlin March 30th, 1970. There’s one recording claimed to be from Basel March 6th, but this is probably wrong, that should be from June 8th. The Köln show has the benefit of containing a jam number of which no other recording is known to exist: “Mumbling Thing Blues”. And there’s another unusual thing: After “Wring That Neck”, Ritchie Blackmore speaks through the microphone to the audience. Just a short sentence, but - as his fans know - it’s very unusual that he does something like this at all.

To be honest I only remember The Byrds. I came in while Family were playing (a wild show). Byrds were stellar. We were lying around somewhere in the back and it was a very warm night. When I heard the opening tune by the Byrds I got up and went to the stage. Clarence white sounded as if he played a hundred guitar.

Some bands may be wrong. It’s just what I reminded and recollected from the internet. And:  I’m not the only one who  has been mixing things up. The bands I marked as (??) are mentioned an some sites, but I should remember them. But I acn’t remmeber Deep Purple in Frankfurt, but they were there.

In those days there was a concept of free concerts. These weren’t free in the official way, although I didn’t pay for Düsseldorf and Frankfurt. We gathered a handful of  guys and burst into the location, in Germany this was called: stürmen. Not that I’m proud of my behaviour but as I said before: Those were the days.

Stephen Foster wrote “Oh Susannah” in 1947. My next radio show will be a Foster-Special.
Oh Susannah must be the song which founded popular music in the USA.
Some thoughts about the original lyrics:
I jumped aboard the telegraph
and travelled down the river
the electric fluid magnified
and killed five hundred nigga.
The bulgine bust and the hoss ran off,
I thought I’d die
I shut my eye to hold my breath
Susannah don’t you cry
First thing is that the lyrics weren’t written in the way you read them here. The second line for instance went:
“and trabbled down de ribber”. “breath” was “bref” and “lectrick” meant “electric”. Reason for this is that it was common in  those days to perform popular songs in the so-called blackface style, which used the language of African-Americans in a not so respectful way (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackface)
More interesting seems to me that some of the words have more meaning than you might expect at first sight: “telegraph” was a popular steamboat on the Ohio river: There was Telegraph No. 1 and No.2. In the next verse the boat is converted in what was expected in the first place: the real telegraph as a media of communication. The Mexican War 0f 1948 was the first conflict to be reported by telegraph in American newspapers. And were not finished yet: The fifth line mentions the bulgine, aka the steam engine of a locomotive. That’s the third transformation into what Walt Whitman called the “pulse of the continent”.

Which leaves us with the fourth verse, where (OOPS) five hundred African-American die. Both trains and steamboats caused many casualties in those days. In the year proceeding new legislations about steamboat security by the US Senate in 1852 people had to mourn 695 deaths.

in 1850 this trinity of train, steamboat and telegraph not only symbolizes the American Dream in thise days it also makes places irrelevant. Louisiana or Alabama - telegraph connects and train makes a change of places an easy thing today. Rural USA has gone industrial USA comes fast and mighty. And the change is not positive in Foster’s eyes: Slaves and owners have dangerous times to face and those 500 are the first victims.

Oh Susanna was one of Fster’s early song and he did’t make a penny out of it. It’s said that his publisher W.C.Peters made 10.000$ from it. For Foster this was the point where he came to thinking that music might earn him a living.

Am 20.01. ist Landtagswahl, bis dahin herrscht hier Flaute, denn ich widme mich mehr meiner Kandidatenseite.

Roots, die Seite zur Sendung, läuft natürlich weiter, wie auch die anderen, die man rechts sieht. Auch von Facebook kann ich die Finger nicht lassen.

In 1968 I was in London, visting clubs and going to concerts - and joining a rallye against the war in Vietnam. The ralley ended at Trafalgar Square with a concert of two bands I didn’t know by then. One was the Deviants (Mick Farren’s band still calling themselves Social Deviants by then) and the other was Pete Brown and the Battered Ornaments. I’d heard of the Deviants but Pete Brown was unknown to me. So I asked a guy standing besides me. “Underground poet” was the answer I got and that was enough to listen carefully. Later I bought the first battered Ornaments record only to find out that Brown wasn’t with the band anymore. Brown later recorded with his own band Piblokto and Graham Bond amongst others. I made pictures of both bands but they got lost - one got printed in my school magazine, where i wrote a report about my journey. The pictute on the right shows Pete Brown and Chris Spedding at that peculiar concert.

On my quest into the past hoping to find pictures and words on the www I stumbled across two books:

“A gallery to play to” is the story of three Mersey Poets: Roger McGough, Brian Patten and Adrian Henri. Patten started out writing (and getting published) at the very early age of 16. He grew up under rather humble circumstances and ended up with Henry Moore and other celebrities. McGough and Henri were well known to me through their work with Scaffold, Grimms and the fantastic Liverpool Scene. The book is a starter: There are a lot more stories to be told about them, the Liverpool Scene part is very small and you can’t read much about Henri’s paintings at all. But it’s better than no book at all about the Mersey Poets so I won’t complain.

Pete Brown’s book is more entertaining, more details and a great fun to read. He writes with humour and knows about his weaknesses. If you ever read the stupid saying of ‘if you remember the 60s you weren’t there’ - Brown’s book is proof that this remark is stupid. He recalls all the parties, his desperate longing for losing his virginity, all the dangerous stuff that went on in his life.

If you’re not sure what the title of his book means: Pete Brown wrote the lyrics for many Cream songs incl. White room, I feel free and Politician, which was a killer song in his shows. He later wrote for Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton too and so you get some gossip about you favourite stars as well.

I scanned the sleeves of some of my singles, starting with No. 18: Yardbirds: Heart full of soul. That’s the first I have co0mplete with the sleeve. I stil have my first single: Kinks: All day and all of the night, but lost the sleeve. Anyway I included some stuff from the sixties and some punk singles - mainly german stuff, including the Mittagspause EP.

Im “Spiegel” lese ich, dass die spanische Modemarke Zara nur elf Tage braucht vom Design eines Kleidungsstücks bis zu dessen Verkauf in den Filialen. Es gibt die totale Verfügbarkeit. Alles ist immer im Angebot. Guthrie stamt aus einer Zeit, wo Dinge noch Wurzeln hatten. Barbara Mürdter schreibt, wie Woody Guthries bekanntester Song “This land is our land” zurückgeht auf verschiedene alte Folksongs aus unterschiedlichen Regionen.
Nie war die Musik Woody Guthries so einfach zu kaufen, zu beziehen, illegal downzuloaden wie heute, aber das heißt ganz sicher nicht, dass Guthrie in irgendeiner Form prägend sein könnte, dass sein Erbe den Stellenwert haben könnte, den es verdient.

Eben deshalb ist sein 100-jähriges Jubiläum bedenkens- und die Biographie von Barbara Mürdter beachtenswert. Sie ist unter dem Titel “Woody Guthrie - die Stimme des anderen Amerika” im Verlag Neues Leben erschienen und kostet 17,95€.
Menschen meiner Generation sagen oft, dass sie Woody durch Dylan kennengelernt hätten. Ich bezweifel das ein wenig, denn der Dylansong “Song for Woody” erschien auf Dylans erster LP, die ziemlich in der Versenkung verschwandt. Ich erinner mich daran, dass Donovan den Gitarrenspruch “This machine kills.” für sich übernahm und auch, wie er Guthriesongs coverte bzw.  mit dem Spruch einleitete “This one’s for Woody”. (”Fascits”  hat er wegggelassen) Das reichte aus, um nach eben diesem Woody zu forschen, was sich als ziemlich schwierig erwies. Geschichten gab es bald genug, durch Dylan und später Woodys Sohn Arlo, dessen “Alice’s Restaurant” ziemlich populär wurde. Meine erste LP mit Woodys Songs war ein DDR-Import, gekauft an einem Bücherstand der DKP. So gesehen ist das Schnee von gestern, ist Woody Guthrie nur Geschichte.
Vor zwei Jahren traten Gilian Welch und Dave Rawlings in Groningen auf und bei ihrer Version von “This land…” war der Applaus stärker als bei allen anderen eigenen Kompositionen und es war deutlich zu spüren, dass der Applaus vor allem auch dem sozialkritischen Engagement des Songs in seinen “vergessenen” Strophen galt. Als junger Mensch hatte ich mich gefragt, was denn so toll alternativ an dem Song war - die beiden sozialkritischen Strophen nicht kennend. Vor kurzem erschien Neil Youngs neues Album “Americana”, auch dieses mit einer vollständigen Version des Songs, die ihre Kraft auch wieder aus ihrer Vollständigkeit erhielt. Mir scheint es ein gutes Zeichen zu sein, dass Künstler keinen weichgespülten Guthrie haben wollen.
Ich glaube, dass es Guthrie gefallen würde, dass er im Gedächtnis geblieben ist vor allem durch seine Songs und dass diese Songs nicht nur in Jubiläumsjahren beachtet werden.
Vielleicht ist es platt und banal, aber ich möcht’s doch erwähnen: Wenn ich lese, dass die Spanier bei 50%iger Jugendarbeitslosigkeit sparen sollen, damit die kriminellen Banken gerettet werden, die gerade diese Arbeitslosigkeit verschuldet haben, dann erinnert mich das schon an Woody:
I’ve seen lots of funny men
Some will rob you with a six gun
And some with a fountain pen
But as trough this life you roam
You will never seen an outlaw
Drive a famliy from his home.

Zum Buch:
Ehrlich gesagt, kann ich nicht sagen, ob alles Wesentliche gesagt wird, ob Wichtiges verschwiegen wird, ob Mythen blind übernommen werden …. Doch, das stimmt schon nicht: es werden ne Menge Klischees angesprochen, die ja nicht zuletzt von Guthrie selbst verursacht wurden, aber billig bedient werden sie nicht, Woody wird als widersprüchlicher Typ erlebbar gemacht. Barbara Mürdter hat eine ziemlich komprimierte Biografie verfasst, die aber auch die unsympathischen Allüren Woodys aufgreift, seine unkritische Haltung gegenùber Stalin, seine Verwertung/Verwurstung fremder Songs unter eigenem Namen. Wichtiger ist jedoch die Grundlegung ihrer Biographie durch die Darstellung soziologischer und politischer Zeitströme, die für das Leben Guthries von ebenso großer Bedeutung waren wie seine Krankheit und seine familiären Verbundenheiten in der Familie Guthrie. Vor dem geschichtlichen Hintergrund werden seine Aktionen erst nicht nur verständlich sondern auch exemplarisch. Rückblickend muss man sagen, es war zwingend logisch, dass es einen Musiker gab, der die tradionelle Musik kannte und der vor dem eher konservativen Hintergrund seiner Herkunft in den  speziellen Zeiten explizit linke Songs schreiben musste. Das ist auch ein Gedanke für die Zukunft: Welche Auswirkungen wird eine massive Wirtschaftskrise für die Inhalte der Popmusik haben? Was ist, wenn den ganzen mittelständischen Konsumdeppen im Zuge einer Wirtshaftskrise die Grundlagen wegbrechen?
Noch ein kleiner kritischer Gedanke: 1941 bekommt Guthrue ein lukratives Angebot, das aber eine Distanzierung von der KP zur Voraussetzung hatte. Woody kneift den Schwanz ein und passt sich an, für ihn ein komplett untypisches Verhalten (das sich allerdings wiederholen sollte). Als Begründung gibt Barbara Mürdter an, er wolle vielleicht den finanziellen Wünschen seiner Familie nachkommen oder habe das Gefühl gehabt politisch in eine Sackgasse gekommen zu sein. Beide Motive spielen in der weiteren Biographie eigentlich keine Rolle mehr, vielleicht hat er einfach Schiss, nie die verdiente Anerkennung zu bekommen. Ansonsten stellt die Biographie sehr deutlich heraus, dass Guthries Verhalten oft egozentrisch und rücksichtslos war. Wir brauchen keine unfehlbaren Helden, von Guthrie kann man auch dann ne Menge lernen, wenn man sieht, dass er oft ein ziemlicher Arsch war.
